Crystal Gives Back Through A Blood Drive In Her Honour

Nena Pestano works at Canadian Blood Services as Volunteer Coordinator based in Oshawa at 1300 Harmony Road. Nena is also taking care of some other Canadian Blood Services (CBS) locations to augment community awareness for blood donation at various places.

Last year, at least two members of her immediate family needed blood due to some forms of medical problems. Her father didn't make it but uses blood during his medical ordeal. Then came her daughter who also used blood on another medical problems which she survived.  Her name is Crystal. 

On Saturday, July 21, 2018, a day before her birthday, her mom scheduled a blood donation drive at the Oshawa Clinic in Harmony Road as a form of giving back and bringing awareness to the needs of donating blood. One donor will save at least three blood recipients. This will also honour her daughter as a survivor from medical problem where she used blood.

There are challenges in bringing people to donate especially from the Filipino community to be more specific. Last May 2018 in honour of Mother's Day, this writer also rally some friends from the community to donate blood on a blood drive sponsored by Heartbeat Media Inc. The blood drive netted around six people who were cleared to donate out of more than a dozen who went through the process to qualify to donate blood.

A series of invitations and campaigns to bring people to come on board and this time, for Crystal, the number was quite significant. Nena Pestano has enormous clout and network that supported her initiative in honour of her daughter. This writer also visited the blood drive today in support of Nena Pestano and her family and meeting Crystal who was also at the clinic. There were few donors that I really knew of, including Ron Ranin from Yoli Health products. Some others which are seen on these pictures below all with various reason and purpose to be there and donate blood.

The awareness campaign for blood donors will continue enticing those who are qualified to donate blood to visit their Canadian Blood Services Clinic and save lives.
